WIMMER, GRÜNER VELTLINER 2023, WEINVIERTEL, AUSTRIA $15.99 Owners Sylvia (née Wimmer) and Martin Hugl both grew up in family wineries, and in 2006, they combined their winemaking knowledge and agricultural educations to introduce their first vintage. In 2013, they combined their two estates to form Weingut HuglWimmer. Martin handles winemaking and quality control, while Sylvia is responsible for estate management, tastings, marketing and accounting. A vibrant, refreshing Austrian white wine with crisp lime, citrus, and gooseberry flavors, accented by hints of white pepper and minerality. These characteristics make it an excellent food-pairing wine, especially with tricky dishes like Sushi, Okonomiyaki (savory Japanese pancakes), anything savory really.

‘FLORES’ PICPOUL DE PINET 2023, LANGUEDOC, FRANCE $12.99 (MIXED) The vineyard of Florensac is one of the oldest vineyards near the French Mediterranean Coast.  The area is ancient, full of remains from being a Roman communication and trade route.  The Vignerons (the winemakers)  have a deep history and connection to the land. The varietal Piquepoul ("to bite the lips") has natural high acidity and produces wines with great brightness.  This Picpoul de Pinet is exceptional.  Salty seaside, lemon rind, white flowers, hibiscus, macadamia, peach pit on the nose. Peach fuzz and orange citrus fight for attention on a beautifully minerally and bright palate with saline undertones + lemony finish. Pair with seafood, especially: ceviche, oysters, a really fun pairing would be a Vietnamese crab omelet.

VOM BODEN, ‘BRAND’ DRY RIESLING 2023, PFALZ, GERMANY $21.99 Local brothers Daniel and Jonas Brand, have been doing their village proud, bringing attention to the often overlooked northern Pfalz region, itself a continuation of the French Alsace region, the climate here is cool, with lots of sun, and the soil is rich in limestone making it the perfect location for the production of intensely flavored, DRY wines, such as this delightful liter of DRY riesling. Flowery on the nose, but on the palate peach and Meyer lemon leap out of the glass. There is a distinct vein of minerality running through wine, which finishes bone dry and extremely refreshing. Another versatile, teutonic white, (honestly I can’t get enough) pair with a decadent meat and cheese plate and.

DOMAINE DE CHÂTEAUMAR, ‘PERLE DE ROSE’ 2024, CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE, FRANCE $18.99 (MIXED) This wine, aged for 5 months in stainless steel tanks, originates from the historic Castel Chateaumar estate, with roots dating back to Roman times. For over three generations, the Souret Family has tended to the vineyards. With a delicate rose petal hue, it presents a captivating nose of fresh red and yellow fruits, including strawberries, raspberries, and peaches. On the palate, it exhibits a soft, rounded texture, with an elegant sweetness echoing the fruit aromas. Balanced by a good minerality, it culminates in a refreshingly lingering finish.

ANTIGAL, ‘UNO’ CHARDONNAY 2023, MENDOZA, ARGENTINA $14.99 Established in 1897, Antigal is one of the longest, continuously operating wineries in Mendoza. One of the first producers to make a single vineyard wine, this has now become their standard and the basis for the ‘UNO’ moniker. For the year 2023-2024 they were named “Best New World Winery in the World!”, but accolades aside, Chardonnay from Argentina is fast becoming a one of our favorites and a category worthy of attention, with the cool climate and higher elevation of Mendoza potentially becoming a new mecca for Chardonnay production. Aromas of mango, guava, and passionfruit with lemon pith lead to a reserved palate with cleansing acidity, finishing with a refreshing citrus note. While there is SOME oak, it is not apparent on the wine and does not translate to the palate.

ATLA, SAUVIGNON BLANC 2023, FRIULI, ITALY $15.99 (MIXED) Located on the hills of Castelnuovo di Garda, that tower over the picturesque Lake Garda, one of the many pristine alpine glacier lakes that dot the northern Italian landscape (think Lake Cuomo but less touristy). These gentle hills mark the northward boundary of the Dolomites, an ancient mountain range carved by long gone glaciation, creating a unique micro-climate that allows for the growth of some Mediterranean climate plants like vines, olive trees and even citrus, which are extremely rare at this latitude (46° N). Lively is the best way to describe their Sauvignon Blanc: bright, fresh, brimming with citrus and grassy notes, a pleasant mineral backbone leads to a fresh and mouthwatering finish. Of all the wines in the half case this one is the best porch pounder and will get a lot of use in the coming weeks!
