BONNY DOON, ‘LE CIGARE VOLANT’ 2023, CENTRAL COAST, CALIFORNIA $15.99 (MIXED) While we enjoy Cabernet and Chardonnay from California, it is our firm belief that the climate of the state is a far better match for the Mediterranean varieties like Grenache and Syrah, especially in the warm and mild environs of the Central Coast. It is here that pioneering Rhone warrior Randall Graham released the inaugural vintage (1984) of Le Cigare Volant, an homage to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. French for ‘flying cigar’ it was their term for UFOs, which were outlawed in Burgundy in 1954 (a result of the Sputnik space craze). A blend of 69% Grenache, 15% Syrah, 14% Cinsault, 2% Petite Sirah, upfront aromas of cherry, red currants, raspberry, plum, blueberry with a light peppery spice and mint leaf. Very savory palate, fresh fruit acidity, supple tannins, licorice and plush finish. Pair with a chili, brimming with spice.

CHÂTEAU LOUMELAT, ‘CUVÉE J.J. LESGOURGUES’ 2022, CÔOTES-DE-BLAYE-BORDEAUX, FRANCE $18.99 Overlooking the Gironde estuary, Chateau Loumelat is ideally located. Its vineyard benefits from a great sun exposure that guaranties a perfect maturation of the grapes and the production of the finest wines. Owned by the Mariochaud Family since 1778, Château Loumelat is now operated under the supervision and utmost care of the Lesgourgues family. For whom this wine is named, it is a complex wine that offers firm tannins and rich fruit. It has weight, density and a strong sense of ripeness. Will pair nicely with all kind of meats: beef, pork or poultry.

YLLERA, ‘NUEVEMESES’ RED BLEND 2022, CASTILLA Y LEÓN, SPAIN $12.99 (MIXED) Bodegas Yllera was founded in the early 1970s by the brothers Jesús and Pepe Yllera, fifth generation of a family of winegrowers known as ‘Los Curros’ the part-timers, it is now managed by their kids. This wine has a brilliant red cherry color with some purple highlights. It is fragrant on the nose with a great variety of fruity aromas (berry fruits, raspberries). At the same time the aging period in American oak barrels gives a touch of vanilla, blended with spices, licorice and toast coming through, and makes this wine very soft and elegant. Medium bodied with a long, clean and harmonious palate. Very round and easy to drink. It is perfect to enjoy with white or red meats, stewed meats, pasta dishes, salads and vegetables, smoked sausages and any kind of soft cheeses.

ANDIS, PAINTED FIELDS ZINFANDEL 2022, SIERRA FOOTHILLS, CALIFORNIA $21.99 Everything about this wine is a tribute to classic California wine country, before all the glitz and glamor we now associate with Napa, it was a remote, rural valley with no fuss and no frills. Recreating this atmosphere was the goal of wife and husband team Janis Akuna and Andy Friedlander, when the started Andis (Andy + Janis) Winery in 2009. Their Old Vine Zinfandel puts this dream into reality, it is a tribute to the farmers who maintained these vineyards for many years, even up to a century. Well-balanced, with multiple layers and a smooth texture that offers a refreshing taste of blackberry and raspberry flavors, complemented by a sharp acidity and fine-grained tannins. Perfect by itself, it would be a great pairing to smoked, grilled, or roasted meats.

JOÃO PORTUGAL, RAMOS RESERVA 2022, ALENTEJO, PORTUGAL (MIXED) $14.99 João Portugal Ramos is Portugal’s most famous winemaker. Before he began making his own wines, he was a pioneering wine consultant, he almost single-handedly opened Portuguese winemaking to the benefits of modern winemaking. In 1990, he decided it was time to start creating his own wine and he began planting vineyards in Alentejo around his new winery, Vila Santa. A blend of native Alentejo grapes: Trincadeira and Aragonez plus a touch of Syrah for added body. Ruby red in color. This wine displays aromas of ripe red fruit and dried herbs. It is soft and robust with complex tannins. On the palate, the wine is spicy with a long finish. Pair with sausage and peppers, herb-roasted lamb, or beef stew.

LE MOULIN CHAPITRE, CABERNET FRANC 2020, CHINON, FRANCE $18.99 This wine takes its name from an old french term, tenir chapitre, meaning ‘hold these meetings’ and ‘Moulin’ a windmill, referring to an old mill where the vignerons would meet to discuss affairs.  So they had called the place "le Moulin Chapitre”… Aromas of red fruit and just a touch of smoke on the nose. In the mouth the wine offers ripe, rounded tannins. The fact the vines are old is evidenced by the concentrated and rich mouthfeel, without however the wine losing the typical freshness that is the true characteristic of Cabernet Franc. The finish is long, fresh and balanced.
