FIGUIERE, ROLLE (VERMENTINO) 2023, LANGUEDOC-ROUSILLON, FRANCE $17.99 Figuière is located in La Londe-les-Maures between Marseille and Nice with vineyards that lie just a few hundred meters from the Mediterranean Sea. Alain Combard purchased the property in 1992 after discovering its cool coastal climate and unique schist soils, these two factors define their style and their goal: to craft easy to enjoy wines with fresh acidity and minerality. Made from 100% Rolle, a local name for Vermentino. Aromas and flavors of peach, lemon and wild herbs are accompanied by salty minerality. Ideally suited to shellfish. A chilled platter of cooked and raw seafood including oysters, prawns and langoustines are brilliant alongside the salty and citrusy character of this wine. Rolle’s herbaceous undertones will also highlight pasta or fish sauced with pesto or chicken roasted with Herbs de Provence
GOMEZ Y RIAL, ‘COMPOSTELAE’ ALBARIÑO 2023, RÍAS BAIXAS, SPAIN $18.99 (MIXED) Gómez & Rial is a family-owned winery located in the Ulla Valley, 10 km from the famed pilgrimage cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Founded in 2002 following the marriage of the Gomez and Rial family, hence the winery’s name. All of their production comes from their estate vineyards, with vines aged between 15-31 years old, planted in the traditional pergola-style trellis to prevent mildew, a common practice in one of Europe’s wettest environs. Albariño has always been a staple for us, sadly the rest of the country has caught on causing prices to rise, good quality examples for under-20 have been hard to find. Which is why this one is such a gem: packed with ripe nectarine and grapefruit peel, amazing acidity leading to a slightly salty finish; pair with grilled peaches and fried calamari.
PICCINI, ORVIETO CLASSICO 2023, UMBRIA, ITALY $14.99 The history of Piccini traces its origins back to 1882 when Angiolo Piccini established a small winery nestled in the heart of Tuscany, with just 7 hectares of vineyard. From that beginning, the company has flourished and now boasts a global presence in over 90 countries. Straw-yellow color, with greenish hues. Its aroma is notably fruity, featuring delicate traces of citrus, green apple, and fragrant acacia flowers. The flavor profile is both light and vibrant, achieving a delightful equilibrium between sweetness and freshness. Nuances of lemon, grapefruit, and pear stand out, interwoven with a subtle hint of honey, which concludes with a lingering mineral undertone on the palate. It is a perfect match for pumpkin soup, gratin vegetables and savory pies.
