COVALLI, GAVI 2023, PIEDMONT, ITALY $16.99 Of the myriad of white wines in Italy, it’s always been hard to pick an absolute favorite, but if I had my back against the wall, I’d probably go with Gavi, a complex medium-bodied white from Piedmont that is reminiscent of Sancerre, but with stone-fruit (peach, nectarine) as the primary fruit note. Fresh and clean, with a pleasant minerality that comes from the unique terroir of the Gavi area. It has a straw yellow color with greenish highlights, the bouquet is delicate with hints of almond, notes of fruits, blossoms and freshly cut hay. The taste is fresh and mineral with a sapid finish. It pairs well with aperitifs, mixed green salads and garlic butter prawns. Ideal as a by the glass wine.

CASAL VENTOZELA, ‘VĒ VĒ’ VINHO VERDE 2023, MINHO, PORTUGAL $14.99 (MIXED) Casal de Ventozela consists of 45 hectares of sustainably farmed vineyards in the heart of the Vinho Verde region. The estate is a family run business, with a strong focus on the environment and a genuine passion for wine and nature. Ventozela has a noble history, dating back to 1874. A century later, it was acquired by the current owner, Jose Ferrera Cortinhas, who was responsible for resurrecting the estate following the April 25 revolution in 1974. The winery first started selling its grapes and in 2008, its first wines were bottled. A classic Vinho Verde, bursting with lively acidity and flavors of melon, lemon/lime zest, green apple, white flowers and saline. Slightly effervescent and dry.

BIOHOF PRATCH, GRÜNER VELTLINER 2023, WEINVIERTEL, AUSTRIA $15.99 Early on it became clear that Stefan Pratsch would take over his parents' winery. Located in the Weinviertel, a region on the outskirts of Vienna and has for generations supplied the capital with wine. Stefan’s focus has been on making wines in a natural method, using only spontaneous rather than industrial yeast, this reduces the amount of histamines in the wine, reducing the likelihood of any nasty reactions. This combined with minimal sulfuring, makes Stefan’s wines the best for people who might get “wine headaches”. His Grünner might be the perfect summertime white: Herbal, fresh, spicy, with notes of  white pepper, apple and citrus. It is one of the driest whites out there; enjoy poolside with some nachos!

CHEHALEM, PINOT NOIR ROSÉ 2024, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON 16.99 (MIXED) Chehalem traces its history back to the Ridgecrest Vineyard operations in 1980, which was the first vineyard planted on what would one day become the Ribbon Ridge AVA. The 2024 vintage was truly one for the books, or in the words of one winemaker: “the best we’ve ever had!” Bursting with fresh, bright aromas of green strawberry, grapefruit, and rose petal. The palate is luscious, with a soft texture and a delicate beam of acidity that dances across the tongue. The finish is high and bright, lingering on aromas of starfruit and ripe strawberry. A perfect porch-pounder!

CONDE VALDEMAR, TEMPRANILLO BLANCO 2023, RIOJA, SPAIN $16.99 The world of wine is replete with gimmicks, one such trick is to take a red wine and make it like a white wine, i.e. no skin contact. The result is interesting and novel, but hardly something to inspire devotion. When I heard about a white Tempranillo, I naturally assumed the same thing, but boy I was wrong! Turns out Conde Valdemar has isolated and propagated the only extant albino clone of Tempranillo. So this wine was made as a tried and true white wine, not some gimmick, and only one sip is all it will take to make you fall in love with it. Aromas of melon and pear, complemented by hints of grapefruit peel and subtle notes of aromatic herbs. On the palate, it has a smooth and easy entry, with a fresh and creamy texture. The white fruit and herbal notes persist, leading to a long finish with a distinctive saline touch, a reflection of the limestone soil from which the vineyard originates.

ANDRÉ ROBINEAU, ‘CAVE DU FORT’ SAUVIGNON BLANC 2023, TOURAINE, FRANCE $12.99 (MIXED) André Robineau embodies the viticultural excellence of France's Loire Valley. This renowned producer has forged a solid reputation in the wine world, offering know-how inherited from generations of passionate winemakers, his wines always perfectly illustrate the diversity and quality of the terroirs of the central Loire valley, most notably Sancerre, but at the other end of the spectrum are the Touraine Sauvignon Blancs; and while not as complex as Sancerre, they offer a snapshot of that quality for a fraction of the price! Vibrant yet delicate notes of lemon and lime mingle with bright acidity and a grassy, peppery quality; it is a knock out pairing with fish tacos and salsa verde!
