LUCIEN ALBRECHT, CUVÉE BALTHAZAR PINOT BLANC 2023, ALSACE, FRANCE $16.99 Lucien Albrecht is one of the most distinguished producers of white wines in Alsace, founded in 1698 when Balthazar Albrecht settled in Orschwihr, a small village flanked by rolling hills and ideally situated for grape-growing. Today the winery is known worldwide for the finesse, unique aromatic structure and freshness of its still and sparkling wines. This Pinot Blanc, named after their founder, shows aromas of green apple, pear, and a hint of white pepper. On the palate, it offers vibrant flavors of citrus, melon, and a touch of minerality, complemented by a refreshing acidity and a clean, zesty finish. Straw yellow in color, it offers an intense aroma reminiscent of sage, bell pepper, and hazelnut; on the palate, it is fresh and floral, with remarkable persistence. The name was inspired from the famous book: To Kill a Mockingbird, but unlike the serious nature of the book, these wines aim to reflect a typical and light-hearted style of wine true to the most enjoyed grape varieties originating in South Africa. The motto: Optimism, beats the pants off pessimism.This bright and fresh white is a great example of Chenin Blanc’s potential in South Africa. Brimming with aromas and flavors of fresh honeysuckle, pear, lemon, and cereal grains, the wine is full-flavored, balanced, and incredibly versatile. VILLA WOLF, PINOT NOIR ROSÉ 2024, PFALZ, GERMANY 15.99 (MIXED) Founded in 1756 the J.L. Wolf estate (now called Villa Wolf) was a successful and highly regarded winery for more than two centuries. In the latter years of the 20th century, however, the estate languished, lacking a firm hand to guide its wine production. Ernst Loosen, of the Dr. Loosen estate, took over the vineyards in 1996, launching a dramatic turnaround in the estate’s quality and reputation. Located in Pfalz, called the ‘Tuscany of Germany’ due to its high number of sunny days, Pinot gets to the perfect ripeness for Rose, made in the direct press method, it is light and refreshing, with deliciously bright berry and fruit flavors and a clean, zippy finish. Pair with zucchini frites dipped in garlic aioli, anything fried really.
DOMAINE DE LA FESSARDIÈRE, MELON DE BOURGOGNE 2023, MUSCADET, FRANCE $18.99 The domaine was founded in 1978, when Michel Sauvion decided to leave his family's domaine and set up his own estate following the vision he had to make unusual Muscadet aged in large oak foudres (large barrels, big enough to walk into). Today it is managed by next-generation winemakers Jerome Dumanois and Emeline Bergeron, who purchased it from Michel in 2014, and carry on his winemaking mission. This Muscadet is a little unusual as half of it is aged in large ancient Alsatian foudre, this is to relax the naturally high acidity and coax out more flavors from one of the lightest white varieties around. Unmistakable notes of bright citrus on the nose, leading into a palate of surprising richness, while retaining the hallmark brightness and salinity that Muscadet is known for. Perfect with oysters, especially grilled.
