ESPRIT DE SAINT-SULPICE, SAUVIGNON & SÉMILLON 2024, BORDEAUX, FRANCE $14.99 The 145-acre Château Saint-Sulpice estate is situated in the eponymous village in northern Entre-Deux-Mers, just south of St. Emilion and 14 miles northeast of the city of Bordeaux. It has a unique micro-climate that gives it a warmer, dryer autumn than normal, easing harvest and producing fresh, vibrant wines. A blend of 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon it has a complex aroma of limes, honeysuckle, mangoes, and pineapples. Carefully blended, the wine is dry yet full flavored, with a long mineral streak on the finish. This delicious dry white can be served as an aperitif or as a perfect complement to shellfish, seafood, salads, and white meats. A perfect way to kick off a holiday celebration!
BARDOS, VERDEJO 2024, RIBERA DEL DUERO, SPAIN $15.99 (MIXED) Located in the remote region of Páramo de Corcos, it is the coldest, highest and most remote sub-region within the Ribera del Duero, far from any roads or towns and largely devoid of any civilization. The payoff comes in the form of wines with clarity, structure and intensity unlike more fair-weatherer fruit. Their Verdejo, the signature white grape of the region, has an intense aroma of white fruits, citrus and cut grass with a light touch of balsamic and mineral notes. The taste is fruity, fresh and elegant. It has a soft texture, nice acidity and great finish.
DI MAJO NORANTE, FALANGHINA 2023, MOLISE, ITALY $17.99 This old vine wine is made from Falanghina, an ancient variety cultivated in Molise by the ancient Samnites, who considered it one of the best. A small, family owned winery, Di Majo has been making wine since the late-19th Century in the area of Norante di Santa Cristina, a stones throw from the Adriatic Sea. The vineyard where the grapes are grown faces south, with a clay soil that gives it a particular minerality and balance between acidity and body. Golden, straw yellow color with green reflections. Fresh, pleasant bouquet with hints of lemon rind, grapefruit and chamomile aromas. Pleasant on the palate with a slightly bitter after-taste that recalls pomegranate seeds. It is the perfect wine to include with your feast of the seven fishes.
CANTINA ZACCAGNINI, BRUT BLANC DE BLAC NV, ABRUZZO, ITALY $18.99 (MIXED) A bottle of bubbles is always a must during the holidays, and this interesting yet approachable offering from Cantina Zaccagnini is the perfect accompaniment to all your holiday festivities. Made from the peculiar Pecorino variety (named for the baby sheep who give the region’s famous cheese its name), it is fresh, bright and zippy. It opens with aromas of green apple, citrus, and white flowers, leading to crisp flavors of lemon, apple, and almond balanced by fine bubbles. Bright, toasty, and refined, it pairs beautifully with seafood, salads, and soft cheeses.
TOKYO GOMEZ-ROJO, ‘LA MALPAGADA’ ALBILLO MAYOR 2020, RIBERA DEL DUERO, SPAIN $21.99 A rare white wine from the Ribera del Duero. Made from Albillo Mayor, the grapes come from small (very) old vineyards spread across the region. 15% of the wine is aged in oak with skins contacted, explaining the more golden color the wine has, the rest is fermented in concrete for 6 months. Aging takes place under lees for 6 months in small french oak, earning this white the ‘crianza’ designation usually reserved for red wines. This process creates an aromatic and complex nose, with primary aromas of stone fruit, especially peach, but also more complex aromas, such as fresh brioche and sweet honey notes (not sweet though). On the palate it is creamy with a lot of volume but with very polished tannins and an acidity that gives it balance and invites you to continue enjoying it. Age 5-10+ years.
CHEHALEM VINEYARDS, PINOT GRIS 2024, WILLAMETTE VALLEY, OREGON $16.99 (MIXED) Chehalem traces its history back to the Ridgecrest Vineyard operations in 1980, which was the first vineyard planted on what would one day become the Ribbon Ridge AVA, northwest of Newberg, Oregon. In 1988, Bill Stoller invested in Ridgecrest, setting a course for his entry into the Oregon wine industry. Bill has been a pivotal figure in the second generation of growers in the Willamette Valley, helping to turn it into one of the best regions of producing wine in the US. His Pinot Gris is always a wonderful offering, perfect for anytime of the year. Aromatically, this wine is clean and vibrant. It has notes of fresh pear, lifted by white pollen and lime rind. The palate is juicy and bright with light mid-palate viscosity. It finishes with a long, lingering balance between crisp acidity and ripe fruit character.
