STRANGEWAYS, PINOT NOIR 2024, SANTA LUCIA HIGHLANDS, CALIFORNIA $15.99 (MIXED) It can be a tall order to find a good value Pinot Noir from California, too often they are flat and overly extracted, too fruity and lacking acidity. But, when we do find one, we are always overjoyed as when done correctly they can be some of the most interesting and pleasing wines to find. 2024 is the first year Strangeways will be entirely soured from Santa Lucia Highlands sites! One of the most respected sites for Pinot in the US! All sustainably farmed and aged for eight months in French Oak, creating a good deal more complexity and a more substantial mouthfeel, no watery Pinot here! Light bodied but with good texture, notes of dark cherry, cola spice and vanilla.
BODEGAS PARRA JIMÉNEZ, ‘GULP HABLO VAMOS’ 1L 2024, CASTILLA-LA MANCHA, SPAIN $17.99 Nestled on the high-desert plateau of La Mancha, Bodegas Parra Jiménez is renowned for its production of biodynamic wines. In 2004, the Parra family embarked on an ambitious expansion: to create a biodynamic, self-sustaining ecosystem. Today, the estate produces not only wine but also organic garlic and Manchego cheese. A true kitchen sink blend mostly composed of Tempranillo; it is an easy drinking, light bodied red that’s packed with vibrant red berry and stone fruit flavors with hints of fresh herbs. Refreshing and delicious, it’s best served with a light chill.
CROUS ST. MARTIN, ‘LES ETRIERS’ ROUGE 2023, CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE, FRANCE $14.99 (MIXED) A rising star of the southern Rhône region, Crous St Martin is a collaboration between Rhône expert Harry Bosmans and Eric Bonnet of Domaine Bastide Saint Dominique. Harry is a household name amongst quality growers in the Rhone Valley and an invaluable resource thanks to his skill on both the production side and the sales side. Eric’s family has been growing grapes in the northeast corner of the Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation for three generations now, with 120 acres of vines in their name. A near equal blend of Grenache and Syrah, it opens with savory nose intertwined with aromas of fresh plums, notes of freshly crushed plum, black currant, apple skin, and black olive on the palate lead into a subtle saline finish.
YALUMBA, ‘THE Y SERIES’ SHIRAZ 2023, SOUTH AUSTRALIA $12.99 Yalumba's Y Series is a collection of youthful wines, sustainable and vegan. These wines bring a fresh twist to authentic Australian winemaking practices and explore off the beaten path grapes. This is a rich and ripe Shiraz with juicy red fruits, a hint of spice and smooth tannins. A highly drinkable wine. A seductive, alluring bouquet of wild blackberries, chocolate coated cherries and Black Forest cake with subtle hints of Indian spices. The Y Series Shiraz is a glorious mouthful of South Australia with layers of ripe blackberries, Christmas cake and soft, velvety tannins. Drinks perfectly with sausages, mashed potatoes and gravy; or enjoy with nachos.
BARAHONDA, ‘CARRO’ TINTO 2024, YECLA, SPAIN $15.99 (MIXED) The Candela family established the bodega in 1925. Located in the warmer southeastern part of Spain, Yecla is one of the country's oldest wine regions, with a rich history that dates back to the 6th Century AD. Monastrell is better known as Mourvédre in France's Chateauneuf-du-Pape appellation, where the terroir and climate are similar to Yecla. Both regions have a Mediterranean climate with warm days and nights. This wine combines the powerful Monastrell (50%) grape with the spicy, soft tannins of Syrah (25%) and the silky texture of Merlot (25%). Aromas of cherry and licorice are complemented by a suggestion of dark chocolate, and a smoky nuance emerges slowly. Spice-tinged red and blue fruit flavors show very good depth as well as vivacity thanks to a spine of juicy acidity. Finishes quite long, with lingering spiciness, gentle tannins and an echo of sweet red fruit.
CHATEAU L’ESCART, ‘DEXTER’ MERLOT 2022, BORDEAUX, FRANCE $17.99 The Laurent family has been sharing their passion for wine for decades, through the cuvées of Château L’Escart, produced from their vineyard in Saint-Loubès north of Bordeaux proper. Gérard and his team know that greatness in wine depends essentially on the greatness of the grapes. This chemical-free wine is vinified without added sulfites.  It benefits from a gentle fermentation that preserves all its authenticity. Medium body, dark fruited with dried herbs---rosemary, thyme and oregano. Lots of complexity and plenty of body and structure to hold up to heartier fare, but perfect by itself!
