ADARAS, ‘LLUVIA’ 2021, CASTILLA-LA MANCHA, SPAIN $11.99 A blend of 60% Verdejo, 40% Sauvignon Blanc. This blend is fast becoming a favorite of ours: the aromatic intensity of the Verdejo grapes complemented by the freshness and acidity of the sauvignon blanc, a synergy that is commonly seen amongst the whites of Bordeaux. Clean and bright with a harmonious balance of the grapes, it shows aromas of tropical fruit and subtle notes of peach and apricot. The palate brings balanced complexity and an intense, long, fresh finish. This versatile wine will go with a cheese platter as well as seafood pasta.
GOMEZ Y RIAL, ‘COMPOSTELAE’ ALBARIÑO 2021, RÍAS BAIXAS, SPAIN $14.99 (MIXED) For us, Albariño has always been the harbinger of spring, and it’s always a treat when we find a new one that meets our standards: founded in 2002 by the Gomez and Rial families, they farm a small plot of land 10 km outside the famed Santiago de Compostela cathedral. Clean and bright with vibrant yellow tones. Complex and aromatic notes of orange blossom, citrus, honeydew and grapefruit. The palate has a lovely mouthfeel with lively fruit sensations of nectarine, lemon zest and a slight salinity.
VIGNEDILEO, VERDICCHIO 2021, MATCHE, ITALY $13.99 It might be ironic that one of the most seafood friendly wines in all of Italy hails from its only land-locked province: the Marche, a maze of valleys cut into ancient rain worn mountains. However, once one inspects the soil and finds numerous ancient mollusks ensconced in upturned limestone, suddenly it all makes sense, they’ve been side-by-side for years. Tropical fruit and almond notes are on the nose. Light-medium body, it has a pretty, soft and dry mouthfeel with flavors of lemon, lime and orange peel. Pairs perfectly with any tangy seafood preparation, like escabeche.
HUGL, GRÜNER VELTLINER 2021, WEINVIERTEL, AUSTRIA $14.99 (MIXED) Few things excite as much as the sight of a Liter bottle of wine. This tradition dates back to post-War Austria where they had a lot of wine but not much money for bottles so they just used the excess beer bottles, which they had plenty. Gruner Veltliner has fast become a favorite state side. This is an intense and concentrated wine, offering pleasant citrus and grapefruit aromas, exotic tropical fruits with a hint of freshly ground white pepper. This wine cries out for vegetables, think pasta primavera; it also would go great with a poke bowl or a sushi burrito.
D’ARENBERG, ‘THE HERMIT CRAB’ 2021, MCLAREN VALE, AUSTRALIA $16.99 While the red grapes of the Rhone have gained popularity world-wide, it’s fair to say that their white counterparts have been somewhat lagging behind of late. That is why it’s so great to see a top producer take such a considered approach to one of the more difficult and demanding, but also rewarding wine categories: white Rhone blends. A blend of Viognier and Marsanne, fragrant aromas of tropical fruits like pineapple, melon, white peach and citrus blossom greet you on the nose. The palate is clean and fresh, with flavors of honeydew melon, pear, stone fruits, lemon curd and a characteristic pickled ginger in the end. Long and refreshing with bursting flavors through the finish. Perfect wine to pair with Asian food.
XANADU, ‘CIRCA 77’ CHARDONNAY 2020, MARGARET RIVER, AUSTRALIA $15.99 (MIXED) Margaret River has always captivated my imagination. Sitting on the southwest coast of Australia it seems like the end of the world, and with Antarctica being the closest landmass it might as well be the end of the civilized world. Here, cooling ocean breezes temper the normally sweltering temperatures, making the perfect environment for crisp, complex Chardonnay. The bouquet of this elegant wine offers fresh pears, gala apples, and grapefruit characters with underlying hints of rockmelon and hay. Oak is merely a bystander, rather than influencing the wine directly, it allows for greater layers of complexity
