CHATEAU BOUSQUETTE, ‘MAS DES HUPPES’ 2022, SAINT-CHINIAN, FRANCE $17.99 (MIXED) One of those estates that has been farmed since ancient times, it was under Church management until the Revolution in 1789. Since then it has been under the care of a succession of wine-makers, until 1996 when Eric and Isabelle Perret, a Swiss couple, fell in love with the area and the vineyard and purchased it. They were early adopters of what we now call biodynamic principles: maintaining a healthy biosphere to allow nature to work to its greatest potential. This is why the French have no real word for ‘wine-maker’, they believe they are shepherds of a natural process as opposed to direct manipulators. This can be seen in their red wine, a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, it is aromatic with bursts of ripe black cherry, fresh herbs and wild lavender, the palate is juicy and expressive with soft tannins, savory minerality and a clean, lifted finish.
