The Best Value In Albarino

Above: Albarino Vineyards in Rias Baixas, Spain – they are trellised so high that ladders are required during harvest.  The vineyards I visited last year doubled as a parking lot during events at the winery!

I have been meaning to write about this wine for some time as Albarino has gained a lot of interest lately, and the Columna albarino is simply the most consistent value-oriented bottling I have found.

We’ve featured this in our wine club in recent months, and we now have a 15% discount on solid cases! Incredibly fresh and newly released, this 2012 Albarino will stay vibrant for the next 1-2 years.  This is available at Highland Wine today!

Tasting Notes:

Albarino is vinified dry, and has a combination of tropical flavors and peachy stone fruits with minerality to match!  The Columna always has a rich texture which gives it a wide range of pairing options, including somewhat spicy Thai and Indian dishes.  No oak is used during vinification, and only 1200 cases were produced from 35+ year old vines. The winemaker is Raul Perez deciple, Rodri Mendez, and Columna is vinified in the same winery as Raul’s famous Sketch Albarino (which is aged under water).

Albarino’s Home! Rias Baixas, Spain

In stark contrast to the arid countryside that typifies many of Spain’s wine growing areas, Albarino is grown in a cooler region called Rias Baixas (ree-ahs-buy-shuss) located near the northern Portuguese border in Galicia.  The wine laws only allow for the production of white wines in Rias Baixas, and the combination of cool climate and maritime influence produce wines with refreshing acidity.
