Finding a great Barolo for under $30 is never easy.  Although there are plenty of Nebbiolo bottlings in that price range, affordable Barolo needs to taste like Barolo, but still be drinkable even when young.

I think the 2009 Ellena Giuseppe Barolo hits the mark.  It’s a relatively new project and the production level is extremely low….only 150 cases! The oak signature is a little more pronounced which adds depth and rounds out the tannins, but is not over the top as it’s fermented neutrally in concrete to maintain balance.

This is perfect to open for casual gatherings when you want a serious wine, but don’t necessarily have the time to let it breath in a decanter.  Or, maybe you’re having a meal that suddenly screams for Barolo…just grab one of these.

It’s wonderfully drinkable, and still carries that power of Barolo without being overly tannic while young.
