NY Times Top Two Rosso di Montalcino Bottlings! – We have both!

Beautiful Rosso from Montalcino!

New York Times Wine Writer, Eric Asimov, profiled Baby Brunello known as Rosso di Montalcino in the February 13th wine column, ‘The Pour’.  His team listed their 10 top Rosso di Montalcino bottlings and their #1 and #2 choices were 2011 La Torre 2011, and 2008 Poggio di Sotto.

We’re happy to announce that we have the 2011 La Torre Rosso di Montalcino as well as the 2006 Poggio di Sotto Rosso di Montalcino in stock right now!

New York Times Article on Rosso di Montalcino

We grabbed the last 5 cases of each wine, and the 2006 Poggio di Sotto Rosso costs 40% less than the 2008 which was reviewed in the New York Times. The 2006 is a superior year to 2008 in Tuscany, and our $49.99 price is $32 lower Per bottle.  Five cases and that’s it.

Background on Rosso di Montalcino:

In general, Rosso somewhat easier drinking than its bigger brother, Brunello di Montalcino.  Aging requirements are less for Rosso (only one year), but the wine still must be made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso, so it’s one of the few wines in Tuscany that is 100% Sangiovese by law.

Nick’s Tasting Notes

These are both fantastic bottlings, and having tasted them recently, grace is emphasized over power, and they are immediately enjoyable.

The 2011 La Torre Rossi di Montalcino is a bit more focussed and high-toned like a younger wine would expect to be.  Lots of fruit to this one, though, even possessing some interesting citrus nots. The 2006 Poggio di Sotto is as smooth as silk with just a little bit of Tuscan dust! Secondary flavors are starting to settle in now that it’s going on 8 years. Both Are medium bodied and perfect for weeknight dinners!
