We’ve been out of the Black Slate wines for some time and many of you have been asking about them!  These are our top selling Priorats from Spain (usually Grenache/Carignan) and the demand always exceeds the supply.

I’m happy to report today we will be receiving a shipment of a Black Slate Priorat from the village of Escaladei.  My notes are below, and you can try it this evening if you stop by the shop for our Spanish wine tasting at 6:00. Just send a reply if you think you’ll be stopping by and the list of wines is further below!

Background: The Black Slate Project

Wine importer, Eric Solomon, came up with the Black Slate Project to showcase wines from each of Priorat’s nine villages.   The landscapes are dominated by Slate (which we have a sample of at the shop), and the wines usually have an unusually high intensity for their price points, but the differences between each bottling is subtle.

Tasting Notes:

The Escaladei bottling is a new one for us, and has a slightly higher percentage of Garnacha.  Going on 4 years old, it’s had time to integrate, and the flavors are a bit more floral, balanced, and red-fruited. There’s plenty of backbone and tartness to pair with lots of foods, but this bottling highlights some higher-toned flavors.

Highlights:

 – Vineyards are Organically Farmed

 – 40-100 Year Old Vines

 – 80% Garnacha (Grenache), 20% Carignan (Similar to a rhone blend)

 –  Wine is aged in French and American Oak for 20 months.
