Matthiasson Chardonnay! – 12.8% Alcohol – Super Fresh!

2014 Winemaker of the Year – SF Chronicle
Featured in SOMM: Into the Bottle
2017 Nominated for James Beard Award
We are just loving the Chardonnay’s from Steve Matthiasson!  Super crisp, super clean, great intensity and just 12.8% alcohol…from Napa Valley!
Matthiasson’s wines are an anomaly in the valley, and they are difficult to acquire because they disappear as soon as they arrive.  These wines stand-out as an emerging style of chardonnay we’re seeing in California.  This article by John Bonne highlights the trend and Matthiasson is featured prominently.  Steve’s background centers around farming and sustainable agriculture…winemaking came later!

The Linda Vista vineyard is in the Oak Knoll Appellation of Napa Valley.
Just south of Yountville, this represents the coolest climate red wines can ripen in the valley floor, Chardonnay, however, can do very well here.  The vines in the Linda Vista vineyard are not far from those that won the chardonnay competition in the famous 1976 Paris Challenge which catapulted California into the wine world.

In order to maintain extreme freshness, Steve picks the vineyard multiple times…the first harvests are focused on acidity and minerality, while the later ones contribute flesh and richness.  This chardonnay is whole cluster pressed and undergoes minimal stirring.  In fact, less than half of the wine completes malolactic fermentation.  Only neutral oak barrels are used.
The result is a beautifully fresh chardonnay that boggle your mind if you generally prefer a Chablis or White Burgundy over typical California Chardonnay bottlings!
