We’re down to the last five cases of the 2013 Henri Bourgeois La Côte des Monts Damnés Sancerre.  This wine is just approaching its sweet spot….right as the 2014’s are around the corner!

As far as Sancerre’s go, this one is perfectly suited for cooler weather because it is more rich in style and the La Côte des Monts Damnés is arguably one of the worlds top sites for Sauvignon Blanc.

About Sancerre:

Clean, pure, and refined, Sancerre describes the region in France’s Loire Valley where Sauvignon Blanc reaches it’s pinnacle.  The area follows the Loire River in Northwestern France, and Sancerre is located in the most in-land section of the region.

Sancerre is defined by a chalky soil similar to what can be found in

Champagne and Chablis (and England’s White Cliffs of Dover pictured to the right!) and combined with a cool climate produces a sauvignon blanc with wonderfully bracing acidity.  The flavors are dominated by lemon, and fresh herbs and sometimes even a flinty/rocky aroma we wine geeks call minerality.

The Henri Bourgeois Family has been making wine in the Loire valley for 10 generations, and boasts a portfolio of vineyard holdings that is virtually unmatched. This 2013 La Côte des Monts Damnés Bottling is the richest and most intense of the bottlings available. and spends several months on the lees to add body.  With most Sancerre bottlings, the acidity is the key to the length and persistence.

La Côte des Monts Damnés  is the most famous vineyard in the town of Chavignol and translates to “The Damned Mountain.”  The slopes are steep and constant erosion reveals a strong presence of sea shells, a major component of the kimmeridgian soils that contributes to Sancerre’s unique profile.
