Q: What is a grower Champagne?

A: Grower Champagnes, also known as “Recoltant-Manipulant (“RM”), are estate-bottled champagnes. By law, 95% of the grapes used in RM bottlings must be owned by the producer.  In essence, the small families who own the grapes make the wines.

Q: Why Purchase Grower Champagnes?

A: These are artisanal wines made by a small families who own extremely high quality vineyards, often Grand Cru exclusively.

Production levels are very low, so the owner/winemaker has complete control in choosing when to harvest the champagne grapes.  The champagnes tend to be slightly drier and are made with very little manipulation in a much more natural style.

Grower champagne houses do not have marketing budgets that inflate pricing.  Many larger champagne houses are part of luxury goods conglomerates that focus on design and packaging instead of growing fantastic champagne grapes.

All of the selections below are available at Highland Fine Wine today.  As always, supplies are limited!

From the Wine Spectator Review:

95 Points! – Wine Spectator

“Vibrant, finely cut acidity structures this seamlessly integrated version, backing layered flavors of poached apple, quince, honey, candied ginger, lemon zest and crème de cassis with hints of coconut and orchard blossom. Shows lovely texture and length. Drink now through 2023. 200 cases imported.”
