The Wines of Drew Family Vineyards

Once in awhile, we get access to a winemaker’s “special project” that was originally destined for those customers who visited the winery tasting room and charmed their way into the good stuff!

The Drew Family Vineyards Suitcase Pinot Noir is such a wine, and though significantly less expensive than the winery’s single vineyard offerings, it is a blend of the higher-end bottlings made predominately from Anderson Valley, CA grapes.

Owner Jason Drew has over 25 Vintages under his belt, and counts John Babcock, Cathy Corison, and John Konnsgard, as his mentors.  His wines are firmly rooted in California’s Anderson Valley where winemakers such as Ted Lemon from Littoria have found choice parcels.

There is very little information about this pinot noir bottle as it wasn’t destined for distribution. The name “suitcase” is a reference to certain Burgundian pinot noir vine clones that were brought to this country in suitcases. The wine includes grapes from multiple vintages and is bottled with a Stelvin (screw-cap) enclosure.  The notes below are directly from Jason Drew, per our request.  When we tried the wine last week, we immediately purchased 5 cases.

From Jason Drew: Owner and Winemaker

Here are some quick notes on the wine.  I wanted to use the wine I saved for a Non vintage.  Every year I have one barrel that I collected from racking.  The blend was a fun project that I thought of also partly because we had extra fruit from the 2012 harvest.

Deep red burgundy color.  Classic Pinot Cherries and ripe red berries with fresh forest floor notes and hints of cinnamon and anise.  The structure is soft and round due to the extra barrel ageing which also holds up great.  Medium full bodied with tannins that have a nice worn velvety texture.  Very approachable with very attractive red fruits.  This wines holds up very well the second and third day as well and is a pleasure to drink.
