Mt. Benson, Limestone Coast –
South Australia
Mount Benson is a unique coastal geographical indication situated approximately 300 kilometres from Adelaide and halfway between the historic townships of Kingston SE and Robe in the south east of South Australia. As part of the greater Limestone Coast wine region, Mount Benson is cousin to other well-known wine growing regions including Coonawarra, Padthaway, Wrattonbully, Penola, Mount Gambier and Robe

Vinification and Tasting Notes:

Holme Estate Cellars is a relatively new project committed to making wines utilizing very old techniques.  All the grapes are hand-harvested, hand sorted, and even pressed in basket presses (as seen to the right).  The result is a wonderfully pure, but somewhat rustic style of wine that shows just what can be done with shiraz in cooler climates of Australian.  There are deep flavors, but lots of tannins with cedar flavors of oak.  Yields were kept low at 2.1 tons/acre, and the soil is red clay over limestone, adding a uniquely rustic profile.  This wine spent two years in seasoned French Oak Barriques.
