Background on Bodegas Sierra Salinas:
The CastaƱo family started this winery as a continuation of their commitment to the monastrell grape. As you can see from the photo above, all of the vines have been planted traditionally without the aid of trellising (wires), and the vines on this high-altitude estate are upwards of 40 years old. The name Puerto refers to valley or corridor between the Sierra Salinas Mountains where the winery is located.

Nick’s Tasting Notes:
This wine fills-out over time, and after around 30 minutes, I thought it reminded me a Red Bandol from the Southern France, but with some cabernet kick! Great intensity and balance with dark fruits, and rocky minerality. Really solid, and its rustic character would pair well with full-bodied dishes that have some texture to them.

92 Points: Reviewed by Robert Parker of the Wine Advocate:
There are 5,000 cases of this remarkable value, another stunning example of the astonishing palate of Eric Solomon and his ability to ferret out exceptional wines at such ridiculously low prices that most consumers will never guess how good they are based on the price alone. Composed of 66% Monastrell, 19% Garnacha and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for one year in both new and 2-year-old French oak, it displays an inky/purple color along with notes of road tar, melted asphalt, blackberry liqueur, camphor, graphite and forest floor. The wine is complex, full-bodied, rich and intense with terrific purity and wonderful overall balance. It is one more example of a wine that completely over-delivers. Enjoy it over the next 2-3 years.
