SOLD-OUT! Black Slate Priorat – 94 Points Again! Unbelievable at $21.99

With Another 94 Point Review!!

Last December the highly anticipated 2010 Mas Alta Black Slate La Vilella Alta arrived and was snatched up in record time!  With impressive reviews and unusually affordable price points, the Black Slate wines have set a new benchmark for entry level Spanish Priorat.

We received the 2011 Mas Alta Black Slate a couple months ago, and the response has continued to be strong.  Now that the 2011 also received a 94 Point review from Wine Advocate (Robert Parker), we’ve secured the last 20 cases!

Pricing is consistent with previous vintages at a remarkable $21.99 before discounts! The blend is similar as well at roughly 60% garnacha (grenache), 35% Carignan, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon

A little background….

The Inspiration for the Black Slate Project is rooted in the Burgundian Concept of village nomenclature, but applied to Spain’s Priorat region.  The goal is to demonstrate how each of Priorat’s nine villages produce wines with distinct character.

Bodegas Mas Alta is a joint venture between Rhone negociant Michel Tardieu and famed Enologist Philippe Cambie.  Based in the village of La Vilella Alta, the vineyards are planted at an elevation of nearly 1000 feet on extremely steep hillsides.  Nick took the picture above while visiting Priorat last year.

From the Wine Advocate Review – 94 points – Robert Parker

2011 Mas Alta Black Slate – La Vilella Alta:

The 2011 Black Slate comes from 15 to 60-year-old, head-pruned vines, and the final blend was 60% Grenache, 35% Carignan and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Blackberry, blueberry, licorice, truffle and camphor scents jump from the glass of this dense, full-bodied, opulent, unctuously textured red. This soft, round, delicious, impressive wine should provide plenty of pleasure over the next 2-4 years.
