Beautiful Sicilian Red From Etna – $24.99 Before Discounts & Really Good!

Beautiful Wine from Sicily’s Mt. Etna!

This wine benefits from a darker appearance and a vibrant garnet-ruby color that sets it apart from its peers.
- Monica Larner, Wine Advocate.
There’s a bit of a “gold-rush” happening on Mt. Etna these days, and the small team at Terrazze dell’Etna set-up camp in 2008. Armed with the incredible Riccardo Cotarella as consulting Enologist and Winemaker, owner Nino Bevilacqua produces some fantastic bottlings focussed on the Nerello Mascalese and Narello Capuccio grapes, both indigenous to Sicily.  We even carry white and sparkling versions in the store!
The high elevations climates of Mt. Etna produce red wines with uniquely fresh aromatics that will challenge many readers perceptions of Sicilian wines.  The style medium bodied – similar to that of Pinot Noir from Burgundy, mixed with a little Barbera and Nebbiolo!

Background and Farming:

The 2012 Terrazze dell’Etna Carusu is a blend of the Indigenous Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio grapes from 30 year old vines planted 2100 to 2500 feet above sea level. These are some of Europe’s highest vineyards.  The wine spends six months in neutral barrels, possibly with a hint of newer oak in better years.  The soil volcanic (lava) and on the young side as Mt Etna is an active Volcano.

I had the opportunity to visit Sicily a few years ago, and the vineyards I saw are like none other I’ve encountered.  As you can see, the vines are planted around structures, trees, and anything else that might be in the way.  At higher elevations, the vineyards are terraced.

Mount Etna is an active volcano, and black volcanic ash blankets the area daily adding incredible variation to the soils of the vineyards.

These are some of Europe’s highest vineyards in altitude so the vines experience diurnal temperature fluctuations in excess of 50 degrees in a 24 hour period!
