95 Point Rioja! – Under $40 on Six-Packs!

Only 14 cases of the 2009 Muga Seleccion Especial Rioja are coming to Highland Wine.  This is a gorgeous bottle, both inside and out, with an incredible pedigree to match.

Bodegas Muga – Rioja Seleccion Especial

We’ve featured wines from Muga in the past, and the Seleccion Especial Rioja bottling is only produced in the best years. The blend is 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha, 7% Mazuelo, and 3% Graciano. Made only from indigenous yeasts, it spends 28 months in oak and emphasizes the winery’s older-world roots.  Fruit ripeness is dialed back a notch to allow tertiary flavors to emerge.

Nick’s Tasting Notes:

It has been several years since I’ve received an allocation of Muga Seleccion Especial Rioja, and I always get excited about this wine! It’s got the goods, but is somewhat tight upon opening, and definitely requires some time in the decanter!  Although it spends ample time in oak, the flavors are still slanted to the old world, with a solid core of fruit balanced by secondary aromas of herbs, spice, and leather.  This will open up and flesh-out considerably.  Acid levels are high with plenty of tannin structure, this thing is a monster in the making!

From Wine Spectator’s Review: 95 Points – Highly Recommended!

Powerful yet harmonious, this rich red delivers black cherry, licorice, fresh herb, smoke and mineral flavors that mingle seamlessly over firm, well-integrated tannins, while balsamic-tinged acidity drives the flavors through the long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2025
